山口晃（やまぐち・あきら）
1969年東京生まれ、群馬県桐生市に育つ。96年東京芸術大学大学院美術研究科絵画専攻（油画）修士課程修了。2013年『ヘンな日本美術史』（祥伝社）で第１２回小林秀雄賞受賞。17年桐生市初の藝術大使に就任。
日本の伝統的絵画の様式を用い、油絵という技法を使って描かれる作風が特徴。
都市鳥瞰図・合戦図などの絵画のみならず立体、漫画、インスタレーションなど表現方法は多岐にわたる。
近年の展覧会に、2015年個展「山口晃展 前に下がる 下を仰ぐ」（水戸芸術館現代美術ギャラリー、茨城）、18年個展「Resonating Surfaces」（Daiwa Foundation Japan House Gallery、ロンドン）、23年「ジャム・セッション 石橋財団コレクションX山口晃 ここへきて やむに止まれぬ サンサシオン」（アーティゾン美術館、東京）等。2023年ニューヨークのメトロポリタン美術館に作品が収蔵される。
成田国際空港や東京メトロ日本橋駅のパブリックアートを手がける一方、新聞小説や書籍の挿画・装画など幅広い制作活動を展開。
19年のNHK大河ドラマ「いだてん 〜東京オリムピック噺〜」のオープニングタイトルバック画を担当。また、東京2020パラリンピック公式アートポスターを制作。
Born in Tokyo (1969), Yamaguchi grew up in Gunma prefecture, and graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1996 with MA in Oil Painting. In 2013, his book Hen-na Nihon Bijutsushi won the 12th Kobayashi Hideo Award. He assumed a post as the first artistic ambassador in his hometown of Kiryu city.
He uses oil painting technique in traditional Japanese style. Known for painting bird’s-eye view cities and battlefields, along variety of media, including sculpture, manga and installation.
His major solo exhibitions include “Yamaguchi Akira: Stepping Back to Seek the Underneath” (Contemporary Art Gallery, Art Tower Mito), “Resonating Surfaces” (Daiwa Foundation Japan House Gallery, London), “Jam Session: The Ishibashi Foundation Collection x Yamaguchi Akira, Drawn to the Irresistible Sensation” (Artizon Museum, Tokyo) amongst others. One of his work was acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2023.
He has further developed the wide range of his practice through public artworks at locations including Narita International Airport, and at Nihonbashi Station (Tokyo Metro). He has also created illustrative work and cover art for a variety of serialized newspaper stories, novels and so forth, continuing his prolific practice across a broad range of fields. For 2019 NHK Taiga Drama, which is an annual historical drama television series, he was put in charge of creating a painting for the background of the opening credit for the TV show “IDATEN-The Epic Marathon to Tokyo”. He has also produced the official art poster for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
