戈さん、立ってますけど、
どういうことですか？

「はい、わたしは電車の中で
手帳書いてます。
立ちながらですね」

驚くわたしを横目にして、
は続けてこう言っていました。

「ワークショップのアイディアとかは
電車内でふと思いつくことが多いんです。
そのアイディアはイメージ図と一緒に
描いておきたいんですよ。

文字だけだと携帯に打ち込むことも
ありますけど、
描きたいときはやっぱり手帳です」

そうですよね。
アイディアのイメージも
メモしておかないと
すぐに忘れがちですからね。

しかしこのスタイルは
のその、ぶれない体幹があるからこそ。
わたしも真似してみたいけど、
まずは体幹を鍛えるところからになりそうです。

[Everyone Has Their Own Way of Writing in a Techo]

When I asked (Wenlai), who handles overseas matters and our techo website, "When do you usually write in your techo?" she struck this pose.

Wenlai... you’re standing? What do you mean?

"Yes, I write in my techo on the train. While standing."

As I looked at her in surprise, she went on:

"A lot of my workshop ideas come to me while I’m on the train. I want to sketch them out along with diagrams.
If it’s just words, I might type them into my phone, but when I want to draw, it has to be my techo."

That makes sense.
Ideas are easy to forget if you don’t capture the images along with the words.

But this style is only possible because has such solid core strength.
I’d love to try it myself, but I guess I’ll need to start by training my core first.

[Report from the Ikebukuro Loft!]

Hello!
I'm here checking out the Loft in Ikebukuro.
One of the staff just told me "It's even more busy than last year!".

It seems that Junji Ito's Tomie series has been particularly popular. People have been really studying them. I tried my best to not get in the way whilst photographing.

Getting to this store is a little bit difficult. I actually got lost in the underground (haha).
Seibu Ikebukuro is in rennovation, so there's less entrances than usual and on top of that the food floor has gone into renovations as of today as well.
You may have to loop around to find your way to Loft.

新しい投稿が来るたびに、
誰かが翻訳をするという体制です。

ところが…
リアムが文句を言っています。
「なんでこんな翻訳が難しい投稿するの、平野さん？」

あれですね、
シオリが「肝がすわる椅子」に座っている、という。
日本語がわかる人にはふふっと笑えるネタですが、
どう訳せばいいんだろ？
と自分も思っていました。

「肝がすわる」は日本語の慣用句だし、
そもそも、背もたれの「肝」の字が漢字だし。

氏は、にやにやしています。

（かく言う私も、こんな投稿を準備してながら、
やっぱり英語でシチュエーションを
伝えられる自信がないので、
リアムが翻訳を終えるまでひっそりと待っています）


[Tough one for translators]

For this round of live text updates, we're providing both Japanese and English.
We've got several translators on standby, and each time a new post goes up, someone volunteers to take it on.

However...
Liam has a complaint.

"Hirano-san, why would you post something this hard to translate?!"

He's talking about this post
, where Shiori is sitting in a chair with the character for "guts" (肝) on the backrest.
In Japanese, it's a visual pun referencing the phrase "kimo ga suwatteiru" (having nerves of steel).
It gives native readers a good chuckle—but how do you even begin to explain that in English?

It's a tricky one.
"Kimo ga suwaru" is a Japanese idiom, and the character for "kimo" (guts) is literally written on the chair. To add to that, "肝" (guts) is written in kanji. It's all very specific to the language.

Hirano, of course, is grinning mischievously.

(And as for me… I helped write that post, but I'm quietly waiting for Liam to finish translating it, because I have no idea how to explain it in English either.)

[Reporting from Kichijoji LOFT!]

I went to Kichijoji LOFT with the Hobonichi Techo team’s (Seriko)!

We heard that some people were already lining up before the store opened, which was really nice of them.
I really appreciated seeing everyone quietly enjoying the planners and stationery.

’s 2026 pick is Hiroko Kubota’s HON.
“She fell in love with the cover at first sight!”

At Kichijoji LOFT, there was also a sale on stationery and accessories. bought some sticky notes, saying,
“These would be perfect for decorating planner pages!”

There was also a tempting section called “Gummy Week 2025 Autumn.”
(September 3rd is apparently Gummy Day in Japan.)
I picked up some unusual gummies before leaving the store.

[Real User Techos on Display!]

At the Shanghai venue, there's a special feature you won't find at any of the other locations.
We're exhibiting actual techos that have been used by real users.

And the number of books on display? Over 50!
It's truly a spectacular sight.
We've borrowed them from 37 users, and they're being showcased in a special corner of the exhibition.
Visitors have been loving the chance to see these incredibly unique and personal techos up close.

While the Shanghai venue will continue to display the new 2026 Hobonichi Techo lineup, please note that items are not for sale at the site.

あのね、日英併記のテキスト中継だというのに
伝わりづらいことを言いますとね。

が座っているこのイスは
「肝がすわる椅子」なのです。
背もたれが漢字の「肝」になっていて、
何事にも動じずに座っていられます。
生活のたのしみ展で展示をしていた、
ミチルさん考案の椅子です。

冗談みたいなアイデアの椅子に
何食わぬ顔で座っているしおりは、
ほんとに肝がすわっていました。

[Shiori’s settling her nerves]

So, we’ve been posting these updates in both English and Japanese, right?
Well, here’s one that’s nearly impossible to translate.

Shiori is “steeling her nerves”* in the nerve-steeling chair.
Look at that strong posture—nothing could shake her right now.

This chair was created by Michiru for the “Joy of Life” exhibition.

There’s something perfect about Shiori sitting so casually in what’s basically a novelty chair... she really does look like her nerves are unshakable.

Liam's note: *In Japanese there’s a phrase similar to “having nerves of steel,” but literally it means “for your guts to sit/steady.” The pun here is that the chair’s backrest is shaped like the kanji 肝 (kimo, “guts”), which appears in that phrase. So yes… it’s one big visual pun.
