Part Three	Olympics
糸井
Itoi
We were surprised at the news of your marriage, but even more at your return to competitive figure skating. I see you as a very talented person, and your talent goes far beyond the ice rink. When I saw you branching out into other areas of interest, especially with the tendency of athletes to face physical struggles as they get older, I figured you would just gradually depart from figure skating and flourish in other places.
Johnny
I hope so. (laughs)
糸井
Itoi
But you actually came back to face the Sochi Winter Olympics. I’m just an amateur, but as I understand, it’s not an easy task to aim for the Olympics with your age and physical fitness, relatively speaking. How did you feel about your decision to come back to compete? Doesn’t that hold you back from other opportunities beyond figure skating?
Johnny
Yes, but there’s no feeling like competing in the Olympic Games.
糸井
Itoi
Ahh.
Johnny
Nothing that I’ve found has the same feeling of accomplishment. And, given that I’m a figure skater from a very young age, figure skating is the one thing that I want to be accomplished in more than anything else. Last year I tried to compete, and I had a lot of health problems and issues that I couldn’t have foreseen. But thank God it happened when it did.
糸井
Itoi
I see.
Johnny
But, the main reason I wanted to compete again was to show my fans especially, and anybody that hates me, that you can do anything if you work hard and do your best. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how fat you are, how skinny you are—you can achieve anything if you try. And, while I didn’t win my competitions last season, I did something that very few skaters do, and actually returned. I finished a competition, and good or bad, I did what I said I would do. And now so many have written me to say that they’re really proud of me. I was able to overcome something hard in my life to show that this is possible. That’s why I did it. Not to win a gold medal at the Olympics, not to become four-time national champion. But to make people happy, to make people smile, and make people believe in themselves.
糸井
Itoi
I can’t think of a better place than the Olympics to make a comeback for a reason like that. So what you’re saying is that performing in an ice show and competing for the Olympics are two very different things.
Johnny
Yes, absolutely. Figure skating in an ice shows is for entertainment. Of course, we do difficult jumps and things that we do in competition, but there’s freedom to it. There are so many strict rules to follow in competition. Frankly speaking, I hate all those rules, but they can be very inspiring. So while I like the freedom of the ice shows more than competition, training and competing is very fulfilling.
糸井
Itoi
You seem to be energized by the obstacles that confront you.
Johnny
Yes. Obstacles make us who we are. It’s not the things you’re born with or the things that you create. It’s the things that knock you down that really show what kind of person you are. Not everybody feels this way, but in my opinion, obstacles have always been the better part of the journey. Every time, I feel like I can continue, and I can improve myself, whether it has to do with my body, my age, my sport, my finances, or my life issues. Somehow as humans we always overcome obstacles, and that’s a very inspiring thing to accomplish.
糸井
Itoi
It sounds like you were like that from a very young age.
Johnny
Absolutely. I’m from a very small village, and there aren’t a lot of opportunities to look forward to. I grew up with the obstacle of creating my own life, and had to learn to overcome even my geography. That’s been the common thread through my whole life, and it makes me better at everything that I do.
糸井
Itoi
You also mentioned your small hometown when we met last time. That must be a big influence on you.
Johnny
I think there’s something very special about coming from a small place and becoming big. And there’s also something nice about people that are big, but keep it a secret and live like they are small. Those opposites are really interesting in life—black and white, love and hate, big and small. Whenever you have something, you always want the opposite. So when you have a lot of money and are born into a beautiful city and have everything you could want, all you want is a simple life, and vice versa.
糸井
Itoi
So when you come from a small village that lacks external resources, all you have to propel yourself forward is your own thinking and your own body.
Johnny
You have to dream. It’s the only answer I have. You have to dream.
糸井
Itoi
So to live, you have to dream.
Johnny
Yes. I think so.
糸井
Itoi
When you say it, it’s got such a punch of reality to it.
Johnny
Thank you. And I know Itoi-san dreams of being an Olympic figure skating champion.
糸井
Itoi
Hmm, my dream looks a little different than that.
Johnny
(laughs)
