HON is a new Hobonichi Techo type
that joined the lineup last year.
This year, we’ve got some new designs
for the HON.
The 2024 edition will be available
in A6 and double that size in A5,
and will also be available in Japanese or
English. This techo makes it easier to bask in
the delight of having a whole page per day.

A closer look at the HON

Comes in a compact A6 size and an A5 size that allows plenty of room to write.
Uses the thin yet sturdy and newly improved Tomoe River S paper.
The thread-bound books have lay-flat binding that keeps the book open without needing to hold it down.

1 Moon phase
An illustration of the current moon phase listed in Japan time.
2 Day of the year
The cumulative day of the year counting from January 1st.
3 Old Japanese lunisolar calendar
The date of the old Japanese lunisolar calendar is included under the day’s date, as well as solar terms based on this ancient calendar.
4 24-hour timetable
Each hour is labeled with a dot, and every 30-minute mark is labeled with a line.
5 3.7 mm graph paper
The graph paper scale was designed to be perfectly sized for writing, drawings, and charts.
6 Daily quote
Each page features a quote from Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun.
7 To-do list
The to-do list has checkboxes for keeping track of your goals for the day.
8 The “Secret Line”
This is a lightly printed line that can separate a schedule on the left from the open memo space on the right.
9 12-color tab
Each month is labeled with a different colored tab on the edge of the page.
10 Mini calendar
A mini monthly calendar that outlines the dates of the current daily pages.

This pencil board is exclusively available as a free bonus with the HON techo. The A6 and A5 size pencil boards are translucent with a printed 5mm graph design. It’s also printed in 1 mm increments along the side so you can use the pencil board as a ruler. Slash (Navy) [A6/A5]
This is one of the basic design options for the HON. The dark navy cover almost looks black, and the diagonal slash is foil-printed in gold. The design is based on the forward-slash symbol ( / ) used when writing dates.

Slash (Ivory) [A6/A5]
A new colorway for the 2024 edition. The ivory has a soft look to it, complemented by the diagonal slash foil-printed in gold. The cloth of the cover has a matte texture that feels nice in your hands.

Liberty Fabrics - Emma and Georgina [A6/A5]
This design uses print fabric from the venerable brand Liberty Fabrics. It has a small floral pattern in various colors and shapes, including vermillion, blue, purple, and green.

Bow & Tie - Cats & Me [A6/A5]
This design is woven into necktie material and has a mint green background with cats sitting and staring us down. It’s like we’ve gotten lost and wandered into a place with lots of cats.

Bow & Tie - Seahorse [A6/A5]
This series uses the same material as neckties, which allows the charming figures on this design to be woven in great detail. The design features green seahorses over a deep navy background.

Tomitaro Makino - Yamazakura [A6/A5]
The design features the botanical illustration "Yamazakura," which was drawn by botanist Dr. Tomitaro Makino, and is characterized by detailed line drawings. Users can make these botanical illustrations a part of their daily lives.

Paper Series - Black Gingham [A6/A5]
The black background is embossed with a plaid pattern reminiscent of a gingham check. The cover is thinner and softer than other HON books, making it lighter to hold. It’s a simple design with no bookmark.

Mother Beginnings [A6/A5]
This design is based on the game packaging for Shigesato Itoi’s Famicom game MOTHER. When the game was released in 1989, the simplicity of the design was revolutionary, with only a gold logo over a plain red background.

ONE PIECE magazine - Like the Sun [A6]
This design is based on the Thousand Sunny pirate ship in the manga One Piece. It has a navy blue necktie material to look like the night sea or deep sea, peppered with characters met along the voyage.

    Some Usage Examples

    Use for work Having a page per day for your work plans and task list allows plenty of room to write. The daily quotes can also provide a surprising source of guidance.
    Keeping up with habits The daily page layout is perfect for keeping on top of habits you’d like to keep or goals you’d like to achieve. By writing down what you’ve eaten or exercises you’ve done, you can enjoy the changes you see later on.
    Recording hobbies and lessons Write down new things you learn from your hobbies and lessons in your techo. Even if you can't write it down on the spot, writing it down later is a good way to review what you’ve learned. The key to keeping up with the techo is being able to feel that progress.
    It’s fun decorating with pictures and colors The graph paper makes it easy to both write entries and draw pictures. Including pictures makes the pages more fun and make it motivating to continue. We also recommend coming up with personal routines, like using symbols to represent the weather that day.
    Organizing thoughts and ideas If you write down thoughts that come to mind into your techo, that might make it possible to think more freely. If you’ve got something on your mind, you can take a load off your shoulders by taking the time to write it all out into your pages.
    Tracking growth The techo can be used as a parenting journal, or to track the growth of pets and plants. It’s fun to read back through the book when you’ve got entries tracking changes in appearance, or when your child learned to do something for the first time.
