Yoshimoto Banana’s Special Holiday in Mykonos

7. Mykonos is Like a Dream Land.

ふじた Do you have any plans to go back to Mykonos?
ばななさん Yeah, I think I’ll be back. We’re accustomed to it. But now that we’re used to going there, we don’t take it very seriously. Last time we went, we were late to the airport, and our seats were all split up. My son had to sit by himself, so I was paranoid he’d spill his cola or something. But it ended up being a good thing, because he got to know the person sitting next to him, and they took pictures of each other. It was nice.
ゆーないと Wow. Was it a Japanese person?
ばななさん No, English, I think. It was a tiny plane going from Mykonos to Milan.
ふじた You always go through Milan, then.
ばななさん Yeah. On our way out we stop in Milan and stay in a super weird hotel by the airport. We always look forward to that.

Fujita, Unite Wow!
ばななさん It’s decorated really strangely. The restaurant looks snobby, but it gives us a way to prepare to go back to the big city. It’s like we can switch modes.
ふじた You can take off your sandals and straighten up after lounging around so much. That must be a nice way to cushion the transition.
ばななさん Exactly. It’s fun going through that transition, too.
ふじた Do you go to any of the other Greek islands?
ばななさん We’ve got a lot of pets at home, so we can only travel for a maximum of seven to ten days. So we end up going to the place we’re used to. And I’ve heard not all of the islands in Greece are like Mykonos, so...
ふじた That’s true. There are other simple islands out there, and each island has its own good points, but Mykonos has a special level of bright and relaxing.
ばななさん Yeah. And we can dress up if we want to, or we can lay around all day if we want to. Anything goes. It’s a perfect vacation spot. Even when I went to Sicily, I thought, “This is heaven!” But Mykonos is even cozier than that, so it’s even more of a dream land for me. If I spent a whole month in a place like that, I don’t think I’d ever be able to go home. Even a week is enough to get my mind hazy.

▲The cats lounge, too.
ゆーないと I’d love to go someday.
ふじた Doesn’t it make you want to go?
ゆーないと Definitely.
ばななさん It takes a bit of effort to get there, but I think it’s really well-suited for Japanese.
ゆーないと I’ll check it out someday. If I go, what would be best? A honeymoon?
ばななさん A honeymoon, that might be good. You definitely wouldn’t have any fights in a place like that.
ゆーないと Really? A trip seems like a prime place for an argument.
ばななさん Yeah. Honeymoons usually involve some kind of argument. Like, “What are you doing still sleeping,” or “We’re gonna be late for our reservation.” But Mykonos, you can sleep all day, and everything will still be open.
ふじた That’s true, there’s never a feeling that you’ve got to be anywhere by a certain time.
ばななさん That’s always the trouble with traveling somewhere. And you don’t have to mess with a man’s pride, because at the restaurant, you can just point at something on the menu, and it’ll be fine. Some people get annoyed when the man won’t pick out a wine, but that’s not a problem there. All you need to choose is whether you want wine or not.

ゆーないと That’s so straightforward. (laughs)
ばななさん Well, I wouldn’t know what to say if someone hates fish, but I guess they’ve got meat too. And there’s no need to stay at a fancy hotel.
ふじた The cheap hotels are adorable, too.
ばななさん And they feel clean, because the air’s so dry.
ゆーないと That sounds great. I’ll go someday.
ばななさん By all means. I think you’ll love it. I’m dying to go now, too.
ふじた That’s wonderful. Thanks for talking with us today!
