-The Second Year of the Hobonichi 5-Year Techo - Preview 1
Introducing the Large Hobonichi 5-Year Techo!

Since its debut last year, we’re pleased to see the popularity of the Hobonichi Techo’s newcomer, the Hobonichi 5-Year Techo. Now in its second year, the 5-Year Techo comes in two new editions. As we approach the October 1st release date, the Planning Director of the 5-Year Techo, Hoshino, will bring you a closer look over the next two days.

Why we made the Large Hobonichi 5-Year Techo

The Large Hobonichi 5-Year Techo is an A5 size techo that’s about 25mm thick and provides space for you to write in the book from the years 2019-2023.

The new size was created after seeing the response of last year’s Hobonichi 5-Year Techo debut in the A6 size.

The reason we initially started the book in the A6 size was because of our goal to make it welcoming for people to write a short and simple entry each day. At this size, it would be easy for users to keep up with the book – even those not confident in their ability to keep up with daily entries. We received a wonderful response from users who were delighted at the compact size and ease of staying diligent with writing entries.

On the other hand, we also received comments from users who wish they could write more in each daily entry or have larger pages so they could use the book for work.

As a test, we reformatted the Hobonichi 5-Year Techo format onto an A5-size paper and saw how it felt to write in it. We were delightfully surprised at how much content we could fit into each entry.

This larger size has about twice as much space in each daily entry as the standard A6 size. Users can write in long entries with a fine-tip pen, stay comfortable while writing in large letters in the newfound space, or switch between both styles!

After much trial and error, we finally completed the new Large Hobonichi 5-Year Techo.

Usage Examples

Here are some ideas we recommend for using your Large Hobonichi 5-Year Techo.

Taking notes for work or writing daily reports among a team

Writing in daily work tasks allows users to look back years later and see what kind of projects they were working on. The book is also efficient for sharing among several employees as a shared report book.

Keeping a shared family diary

By having each family member write in a short sentence about what they did that day, families can have a precious family history book five years later. It’s a delight to read back on all the little everyday events that you otherwise would have forgotten.

Writing in big letters

Because the large size provides extra writing space, you have plenty of room to write in each entry. This size works well for people who write in big letters, people with large hands, and people who prefer to write with broad point pens.

Art journal

It can be interesting to keep a diary where you insert sketches of what you ate, things you bought, people you met, clothes you wore, flowers you found, and other little daily happenings. These little additions make entries delightful to look back on.

Which size will you choose?

Some people may be unsure of whether they should choose the compact, undemanding standard Hobonichi 5-Year Techo or the roomy Large Hobonichi 5-Year Techo. Here’s a look at some of the features that make the Large Hobonichi 5-Year Techo different from the standard version.

Plenty of room to write

The main draw of the Large Hobonichi 5-Year Techo is all the room to write. Each daily entry has 352 squares of graph paper, twice that of the standard book’s 178 squares.

The right-hand page is blank to allow total freedom, so use it however you see fit.

Double the weight

Because the paper size has doubled, the weight has doubled as well. At 675 g (about 1.5 lbs), the book may feel a little heavy when carried around on a daily basis. The Large book is better-suited for leaving on a desk at home or at work.

Larger font for dates and daily quotes

One of our staff members was hoping to give the book as a gift to their grandfather, and requested the printing be slightly enlarged to make it more comfortable to read. This inspired us to print the dates and the quotes at the bottom of the page in a slightly larger size than the standard version.

The font of the dates has been enlarged from 23 pt to 28 pt.
The font of the years has been enlarged from 9 pt to10 pt, with some extra space around the edges to make it easier to read.
Due to the number of characters, the change of the daily quote font had to be much more subtle, but the font has been enlarged from 6.24 pt to 6.5 pt.

More entries in gift registry and address book

With more pages in the gift registry and address book, the Large Hobonichi 5-Year Techo has 40 entries for the gift registry as compared to the standard’s 17 entries, and address book entries for 16 people as compared to the standard’s 6 entries. There are extra columns as well, so you can fill in information that might be useful later on.

That concludes our look at the Large Hobonichi 5-Year Techo. You can find more information about the book through the product page and the detailed guide of features, and availability through the Where to Buy page.

We hope you can find which size suits you best on the next 5 years of your journey.
