After a major upgrade in hardware and specifications, this second installment in the RPG series powered up in every regard. This game introduced Pokey, as well as Mr. Saturn, who would become a representative character of the MOTHER series. The game originally crept up on the verge of collapse from its large scope, but that's when Satoru Iwata, who would later go on to become the president of Nintendo, stepped in to help. This game was released as EarthBound in North America in 1995.

The third and final game in the series was originally developed for the Nintendo 64, but was cancelled in 2000. Development for the game was later restarted for the Game Boy Advance and was successfully released. The setting and worldview in the game slightly depart from the previous two games, but Itoi's playful spirit is still clear throughout. The story is one of familial love, as twin brothers Lucas and Claus find themselves entwined in a strange fate.
